Dear Parents and Friends of St Mary’s,
Seeing the sunshine this week has been wonderful; we all make the most of it during our school day. Please remember that hats are to be worn in Terms One and Four, and if we have students with no hats, they will be asked to sit in the shade of the eating areas.
I also ask that students have a water bottle with them as the weather becomes warmer. This will provide them with adequate hydration throughout the day and less disruption going to and from the drink taps.
We will welcome the Kinder students from the Yarram Early Learning Centre on Tuesday and Wednesday next week from 9:30 am until 1:00 pm. This a wonderful opportunity to meet and showcase our magnificent junior learning space and the learning occurring across our school.
I look forward to seeing the students arrive at school with their crazy sock creations this coming Monday for Socktober. It is a wonderful opportunity to fundraise and provide vital help for the Catholic Mission Charity.
Take care,
Maria

HEALTHY EATING HABITS FOR CHILDREN
Article: Healthy Eating Habits for Children
Key facts
- Healthy eating in childhood reduces your child’s chance of developing health problems as they get older.
- A healthy, balanced diet includes foods from all 5 food groups: fruit, vegetables, grains, proteins and dairy.
- Foods high in sugar, saturated fat and salt aren’t necessary for a healthy diet and should be limited.
- Cooking and eating healthy foods together as a family can help your child develop healthy eating habits for life.
- If your child has specific dietary needs or restrictions, your doctor or dietician can help you make sure their diet is healthy and balanced.
TEA TOWEL KEEPSAKES FUNDRAISER
All students and staff have participated in a unique fundraiser by drawing mini-versions of themselves. All these drawings were put together to be printed on tea towels that will be available to buy very soon. The image can be viewed by clicking on the link below.
Please contact the school office if you would like to order tea towels. Order forms will be sent home within the next few days.
Religious News: Thursday the 20 th of October.
This Sunday is World Mission Sunday. Each year, the second last Sunday of October is dedicated to World Mission Sunday. It offers us the opportunity to celebrate 200 years of Missions. Pope Francis, in his 2022 World Mission Sunday message, invites everyone to answer the call to be a missionary, sharing that “Mission is carried out together, not individually.”
The link below is a beautiful song that was sung by Andrew Chinn’s daughter.

“Socktober”
This coming Monday the 24 th of October, students are asked to come to school in their school uniform, with the addition of wearing socks in
a crazy way. Please bring a gold coin donation which we will forward on to Catholic Missions to assist in the goat-rearing farm in Ethiopia.
We will also be making our soccer balls. Please send clean, old socks and or rags to assist us with this activity.
Liturgies: Tomorrow our Grades Three and Four students will be leading our Liturgical Assembly at 2:30 in St Mary Mackillop Hall. The theme for our Liturgy is Justice. Catholic Social Justice teaches us that all people are made in the image of God. As God is love, we were created to love and be in a relationship with each other. Human dignity is upheld when each person’s needs are met and when he or she lives in harmony with others in a community that together pursues the common good. Catholic Social Justice teaches us to look at reality through the eyes of those who have been made poor by oppression and injustice. We do this when we join together to end poverty.
During Term Four our students are reflecting on elements of Catholic Social Teaching and how can they make a difference.
Kind Regards,
Sue Benc
TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL - A MOTHER'S PERSPECTIVE
How I prepared my son (and myself) for his transition to high school.
I wasn’t expecting to feel so sad at the thought of my first child starting high school.
Philip, 12, is counting down the days until his primary school experience is over and he begins high school. Every couple of days we have a meeting or an assembly or some sort of event marking the completion of his primary education and I keep waiting for him to feel sad at the thought of leaving the only school he has ever known...
Many in our school community continue to face financial challenges from the effects of of the pandemic.
