Dear Parents and Friends of St Mary’s,
I hope you are all surviving this wet and dreary weather we have had as of late. The students are doing a great job of navigating the playground, and we are all waiting for some warmer weather to come.
The student leadership, Miss Haughie and Jo, commemorated Vietnam Veterans Day last Thursday with a ceremony at the Yarram Cenotaph. This event was an opportunity for our school community to pay our respects to the brave men and women who fought for our country and our current freedoms.
We came together last Friday to celebrate the Grade Three and Four liturgy, which tied in with Book Week. The students celebrated all things wonderful about books, how they make you feel when reading and being captivated by the characters, plot and scenarios. We focused on the Bible and how it contains stories of heroes, drama, friendship and more. The students led the liturgy with a prayerful and creative attitude that captivated us all.
We celebrated our Book Week dress-up yesterday, with the students arriving in various amazing costumes. It was wonderful to hear about the books that inspired their costumes and their love of reading which has been the main focus across our curriculum. The theme for this year's Book Week is ‘Dreaming with Our Eyes Open’ We explored what this meant to our students, and here are some of their responses.
When we read, we use our imagination and not just read the words in a book; the words create the picture. Inara Grade 4.
When we read, we can daydream about what might happen next and sometimes we don’t want the book to end. Macy Grade 3.
When you read, it’s like you are being transported to another place and time. It’s like magic! Olivia Grade 6.
Whenever I read, I lose track of time, I get lost in a book. Breanna Grade 5.
I love getting lost in words. Books make me happy! Lilly Grade 5
I love reading about pumps and turbines. I love the pictures in books. Arlo Prep
When I read, I am completely absorbed. Indiana Grade 6.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend and stay safe.
Maria

Religious News
Next Thursday our Grades 5 & 6 students will lead our School Mass. This will be celebrated on Thursday the 1st of September at 10:00 am at St Mary’s Catholic Church. Everyone is invited to attend. Please try to come along as our children enjoy seeing their parents, grandparents and friends at our celebrations. The focus for our Mass will be the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. This annual day, established by Pope Francis in 2015, is an opportunity to pray, reflect and act to care for God’s creation. All of us, both those who most contribute to climate change and those whom it most affects, pray today for better stewardship of the Earth.
Peace for Ukraine
Yesterday, Ukraine would have celebrated 31 years of independence from Russia. However, it was a very sombre national holiday as it was the six-month anniversary of Russia’s invasion.
We are called to continue our prayers for peace.
God of mercy,
help us to listen to your voice,
a voice that speaks of peace to all people.
Let the sound resonate within us,
until a whisper becomes a shout
which cannot be ignored.
Move us with your love,
so that our actions echo your peace,
and we may bring comfort
to those touched by conflict.
Fill us with your hope, O Lord, and
quiet the fear and hatred which divides us,
as we seek to build a future together,
of true and lasting peace.
We ask this through Christ our Lord, Prince of Peace,
Amen.
Kind Regards
Sue Benc
