Dear Parents and Friends of St Mary’s,
A HUGE congratulations to all our students who performed with excitement and enthusiasm at this week's Yarram Eisteddfod. It was delightful to see the efforts made by the children to recite their poems, participate in the vocal groups and work as a team to present their one-act play.
I would like to commend the students on how they conducted themselves walking to and from the theatre and the respect shown to their peers, congratulating, offering words of support when nerves seemed to take over and pushing themselves outside their comfort zones to perform in front of a full theatre. We will celebrate the week's successes with an Eisteddfod Concert and an opportunity for parents, grandparents and special people to come to see our items.
To the staff, Thank you.
Your ability to support students to achieve such wonderful results is a testimony to your commitment, flexibility and creative vision. I appreciate all you do to make this Eisteddfod experience memorable for our students and families.
We have a wave of gastro and winter colds moving through the school, and I ask if your child is full of a head cold requiring them to blow and wipe their noses all through the day, they should be at home. Likewise, we need 48hrs to get over the gastro bug and stop transmission thoroughly.
Take care,
Maria

SchoolTV Special Report - Happiness and Gratitude
Happiness is defined as the balance of positive and negative emotions, combined with overall life satisfaction. Happiness and gratitude have been studied in positive psychology for many years and researchers have found that gratitude is always strongly associated with greater happiness. Although everyone has their own definition of happiness, many of us want to feel more positive emotions than negative ones. However, negative emotions are still important. They have a lot to teach us and alert us when things need to change. Practising gratitude helps people feel more of the positive emotions, enable us to relish good experiences, improve our overall health, deal with adversity and build strong relationships.
St Mary’s Fundraising and Sharon are making available to all families; an
opportunity to purchase Calendars and Christmas Cards through the school.
The calendars will have either one photo of your child or a collage of up to 5
photos as the main picture. Below, will be the individual months that have space to write on and tear off at the end of each month.
There will also be a sibling calendar available.
Christmas cards will have an artwork that your child has completed scanned on the front and your child’s name, year and school on the back.
The calendars will make a wonderful Christmas present for Grandparents,
Family and Friends so please support the school in purchasing them.
Please hand in your order along with the payment at the school office before the end of Term 3.
Thank you for supporting the school to raise money for new equipment
for the students to enjoy!
Order forms have been sent home and are also available at the school office.
Religion News: St Mary of the Cross Mackillop.
On Monday, the 8th of August, we celebrate the Feast day of St. Mary of the Cross Mackillop. Mary’s motto was courage, determination and integrity.
Introducing Mary Mackillop
Mary MacKillop was born in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, on 15 January 1842. She was the eldest of eight children. Her family struggled financially and, from the age of 14, Mary needed to work to help support the family. In 1860, she went to Penola in South Australia to be governess to her uncle’s children. She spoke with the local priest, Fr Julian Tennison Woods, about her desire to become a nun and together they dreamed of starting a religious group.
Six years later, on 19 March 1866 (St Joseph’s Day) Mary wore a plain black dress to signify that she had begun to live a Religious life. Within two years, 120 women had joined the Religious Institute. They took on the work of educating children in small parish schools and caring for orphans and needy women. Little did Fr Woods and Mary know what was to spring from so small a beginning.
These ‘Josephite’ Sisters walked the streets to visit the poor, and lived in twos and threes in rented houses in isolated areas or city slums. The Sisters lived and shared their possessions as equals.
Mary overcame many obstacles to follow her dream, but she never lost hope. Mary’s motto was ‘never see a need without trying to do something about it.’ Her life reveals to us a compassionate God, a God of love. Her actions acknowledged the human dignity of each person. Her life speaks to Australians, in a unique way, of the message of God’s love for all, especially for the ‘underdog’ and the ‘battler.’
As Australia’s first canonised saint, she embodies all that is best in our Australian nation and its people. (article from Resource).
We give thanks, for this ordinary Australian lady who did extra-ordinary things during her lifetime. We give thanks for our school, that was established by the Sisters of St. Josephs of the Sacred Heart in 1918. At that, time there were three sisters, two taught at the school and the other Sister taught music. The Sisters were involved in the school until 1985. From 1985 onwards, they were involved in pastoral care and faith educators for catholic children attending government school within the area. We were lucky to have the Sisters of St. Josephs in Yarram for over 100 years.
Mary truly followed in the Footsteps of Jesus.
Her work continues today. The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart serve not only in Australia and New Zealand but also in Peru, Brazil, East Timor and in Scotland and Ireland, although the name and inspiration of Mary MacKillop extend well beyond these places and across the globe.
This is an interesting article I found about the establishment of our school and the Yarram Secondary School.

On Monday, 1sy August was World Scout Day, which is an opportunity for past and present supporters of Scouts to wear their scarves in celebration andrecognition of their involvement in the largest youth organisation in the world.
However, with everything going on for the Eisteddfod, our Scouts couldn't wear their scarves on Monday, so they have chosen to wear them today.

Scarves are held by a 'Woggle' as part of the Scout Promise and Law to help other people.
