Dear Friends and Families of St Mary’s,
I hope you are bracing yourselves for the busy wind - down to our 2021 school year! The calendar is full of our end of term activities, and I am excited that we can share these, COVID safely, of course!
We came together with 2022 Foundation students and families for our final Orientation and Morning Tea on Tuesday. The staffroom was abuzz with conversation and laughter as staff and parents enjoyed getting to know each other and sharing stories about their little ones.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ben Taylor for his time in the Foundation /One Learning Space over Terms Three and Four. Ben has brought enthusiasm and a love of learning throughout his time with us. We wish him all the best for his next endeavour and he will always be a part of our St Mary’s School Community.
We welcome Erin Henderson back to our St Mary’s Family, and we are thrilled that she will take on the role of Senior Teacher. Erin comes with a wealth of knowledge and expertise in this area and has a genuine love for our beautiful school.
Child Safety is at the forefront of who we are and what we do at St Mary’s. It has come to my attention that certain students scooting and riding bikes to and from school are not abiding by the correct road rules. We have taken the time to discuss this with the whole school what being safe looks like, sounds like and feels like. We want all our students to understand their role in the wider community and be active participants in keeping themselves and others safe.

THIRD FOUNDATION ORIENTATION DAY
Our newest and littlest students had their final orientation day on Tuesday, 23rd November. After a fun-filled morning of Play Doh, Lego and storybooks, they did a Christmas - themed craft activity. We welcomed our new parents over a cuppa and it was wonderful getting to know them all. We are excited for next year.
Many in our school community continue to face financial impacts as a result of the COVID-1 pandemic.
We are committed to supporting families experiencing financial challenges through
our School Fee Concession programs, and encourage any parent/carer/guardian experiencing difficulties to contact us regarding fee assistance.
Please contact Deborah at disemann@stmyarram.catholic.edu.au to explore confidential financial support arrangements or to obtain further information.
How many moms and dads will be telling their children to lie and say “thank you” when Grandma puts her famous green bean casserole on their plates for dinner? Good parents diligently remind their children to say “please” and “thank you” but do good manners really teach our children to be grateful? How important is gratitude and can that be taught?
Advent
Sunday the 28th of November is the start of Advent. On Sunday, the first candle on the Advent Wreath will be lit. The first candle is purple and represents Hope. Bishop Desmond Tutu said ‘Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness.’
During his Mass from St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis stated that, “Advent is a continuous call to hope.” “Confidently waiting for the Lord, allows us to find comfort and courage in the dark moments of our lives,” he said. “Advent prepares us for Christmas and is a time of expectation and hope.”
The key figures of Advent are Isaiah, John the Baptist and Mary. People of great faith and hope, people who welcomed God into their lives so that God could work through them in special ways.
This first Sunday of Advent also marks the beginning of a new liturgical year. We begin the Year of C, where the Scripture reading are predominately taken from the Gospel of Luke.
On Monday, Grades Two and Three will lead the school in the Lighting of the First Advent Candle.
This lovely song celebrates our first candle of Advent.
Kind Regards
Sue Benc
